The Liebster Award and Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo

I have been nominated for blog awards before, and have always said thank you – and then done nothing about it.  So this morning, when the amazing and talented writer Bryan Hemming https://bryanhemming.wordpress.com/about/ nominated ME I thought maybe it was time to get my act together and do something. So, I accept, thank you, Bryan…..If you have not visited Bryan’s blog I strongly suggest you get yourself over there asap.

I drew Frida Kahlo because she is an artist whose work AND life I totally admire, and last night I dreamed I WAS doing this drawing! How weird is that, I felt  I HAD to draw her today. We have the photo I worked from on the wall in our kitchen.

So here goes:

I have to answer 11 questions from Bryan *gulp*

Who has been your greatest inspiration in life?

John Bryant for his book ‘Fettered Kingdoms’. I went vegan after reading this.

Apart from yourself, who would you most like to be?

Iman (then I would be married to David Bowie. But, obviously, just to clarify when he reads this, I would rather be me and married to my man. Sorry to let you down, David 🙂 )

What world event changed the way you see things?

I didn’t want to say 9/11, as it´s so obvious, but actually I have never felt totally safe on a plane since then.

Which three personal items would you take on a trip to Mars?

My ipad (would there be wifi?), my scent (L’air de Rien by Millar Harris) and a good moisturiser, it might be a bit dry there 🙂

Not counting nuclear weapons, which invention would you put back into Pandoras’s box?

Religion.

If you were to become a leader of a nation which would you choose, and for what single reason?

Syria. Let’s get it sorted out now.

If you could choose between being a scientist and a rock star, which would it be and why?

I would really like to be a scientist and understand physics, although when doing karaoke I AM a rock star, obviously 🙂

What would be the quality for which you would most like to be remembered?

I hope I am kind.

Which do you read mostly, fiction or non-fiction?

Mostly fiction.

Which animal  do you think you resemble most in character?

I always wanted to be a cat. I sometimes purr….

Into whose face would you most like to shove custard pie?

Anybody who wears FUR that they didn’t grow on their skin themselves.

My Nominations are:

Violet and Malus at http://violetgallery.wordpress.com/about/ Violet’s charming and beautiful sketches and Malus her gorgeous cat’s opinion of them.

Nancy Farmer’s ‘Cat of the day’ http://catoftheday.wordpress.com/ for her lovely sketches of Percy and Arthur, also check out her main blog for her other excellent art work, of which I am green with envy 🙂 http://nancyfarmer.wordpress.com/

Lottie Nevin’s The Rioja Diaries http://lottienevin.com/ for her captivating and charming stories of life in Spain and her lovely artwork too.

Nikito because I simply LOVE his beautiful water colours of Spain, they totally inspire me http://nikitoart.wordpress.com/

Andrea Stephenson’s Harvesting Hecate, for her wonderful writing and stories, photos and art – all with a touch of magic. http://harvestinghecate.wordpress.com/

I WOULD have nominated Jo Freehand but Bryan already did so 😉

My Questions:

Why did you start blogging?

Coffee, tea or water?

If you could live in any other time than NOW, when would you choose to live?

What’s your biggest vice?

Favourite all time book?

When are you happiest?

Which country, other than the one you are currently living in, would you choose to live in and why?

What or who most inspires your creative work?

What painting or sculpture would you choose to own if you could have any?

What is your favourite piece of music?

Do you find accepting awards one of the hardest posts to write? (!)

  1. Interesting post. 🙂
I hesitate to say this but, as you’re a convert to veganism I think I can take the chance: have you heard of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity? You mentioned that you use scent so I feel a duty to warn you about the dangers of fragrance in general. I hope you don’t think I’m a nutcase. :/ I follow the blogs of several women who are affected by MCS and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. As you were open to changing your diet and lifestyle due to compassion for animals I thought that you’d be open to finding out more about MCS which affects an astounding number of people. For example, I’ve read that more Americans are diagnosed with MCS than with diabetes (and it doesn’t just affect Americans e.g. see http://sensitivetochemicals.com/map/). If you’re interested I can provide more information and links to some of the blogs I follow.

      • Hi Wendy, thanks for being open to finding out about MCS. 🙂 I should have provided more information. MCS can happen to anyone, including the people around you, in response to the chemicals in laundry products, personal hygiene products, man-made products in the environment and so on. In some people the sensitivity can be triggered by a particularly bad exposure to something toxic (like mould in an office) but in other people it is a cumulative thing brought on by continual exposure. It is definitely worth looking into, if not for yourself, then for the people around you.

      • Hi Sarah, I will look into it more but I do tend to have a skeptical approach to these things! My sister has recently developed an allergy to birch pollen, which has similarities to hazelnuts, so she is struggling with this at the moment, so I do understand allergies. I was being frivolous and trying to be amusing when I made a big thing of my perfume, however I DO love wearing it and find it lifts my mood in the morning. Of course, if a work colleague or friend asked me to not wear scent due to allergies then I would stop without hesitation. I will look at this more and let you know my thoughts x

      • Thanks for that. I was skeptical too in the beginning but I have read a lot about it now. I’m so glad to hear that you would be willing to avoid wearing scent if it caused a problem. I follow the blog (http://lifeinthecitywithafuture.wordpress.com/) of a lovely lady who has life-threatening MCS but many of her work colleagues refused to stop wearing perfume and she lost her job through the resulting disability.
Thanks for being patient with me. 😀

  2. Congratulations on your award, Wendy and THANK YOU for nominating me 😀 I’m very flattered and thrilled to have been included in your list. Sorry to have only just read your post. I’ve been up to my armpits in paint and ghesso all week desperately trying to make some sense of the chaos which is Casa Nevin. Loved hearing more about you via your award – what a fascinating and talented lady you are.

  3. Hi Liebster Nominee,

Great portrait of Frida. You should win for that! (And of course ALL of your writing and drawings.) I hope the prize is that you get turned into David Bowie’s cat and sort out Syria between karaoke sets. Even if you don’t, you will be remembered for being kind.

Thank you for your “WOULD have” vote!
